Recently, the idea of school trips is being supported by school authorities. Some have now even added it to their annual calendar. School trips are a great way to take learning outside of the classroom and inspire your students. If you are planning on taking your pupils out on a trip, then below are tips that will be useful to you.
#1. Purpose of the trip
First of all you need to establish the purpose of your trip. Remember that it has to be a trip where students can learn something. School authorities and parents might be reluctant to let their children attend if the trip has no academic importance.
#2. Places to go
This is one of the first decisions you have to make which is relatively easy. Spend some time in listing out the places that you would like students to visit. Remember that these places have to be in line with the purpose of the trip. Also remember to consider locations that are best for the excursion. Some places require permission / notice before visiting. So make sure that this is sorted out. For safety reasons, enough research has to be conducted on these places before you make your final decision.
#3. When to go
Deciding on the time can be a bit challenging as trips would usually be costlier than usual during school holidays because these locations would be filled with visitors then. On the other hand going during school sessions might be inconvenient especially during a period of tests and exams. Striking a balance between school commitments and the most cost-effective time to schedule the trip will be necessary and this is why adequate planning time is required.
#4. Budget
After all the planning is done, you would have had an idea of how much the entire trip will cost. Although some schools take care of all the expenses, others don’t. Costs could include lodging (if it is going to be for more than a day). Entrance fees, cost of trip, snacks and miscellaneous all have to be figured out so you know how much you need to raise and how much to ask from each student. Remember you are dealing with students so the budget has to realistic
#5. Permission
It’s expected for some parents to be very concerned about how safe the trip is. You will need the help of your school authority to convince the parents that you have put everything in place to ensure their child’s safety and security. If possible arrange a meeting where you can convince them more and answer any questions they have to clear all doubts. Also tell them the importance of the trip and how much students will benefit from it. It will get you more consent. This is why the initial purpose of the trip should be strong.
#6. Get a team
This is very important if the number of students attending the trip is relatively high. You will need people to help you in keeping an eye on the students and assist them in things that they need.
Planning a field trip or an excursion for your pupils need not be a tedious affair if you know how to go about it. With proper planning, students should have fun and learn new things at the same time.
