As the mother of the bride or groom you will definitely be feeling happy and proud that your child is getting married. Some mothers however get overwhelmed with this feeling and they tend to be controlling and pushy, wanting to be at the center of it all. It’s vital for them to understand that the wedding is not theirs but the bride and the groom. Here are some essential tips for the mothers of the bride and groom.

#1. Know your boundaries

Some parents will want to dictate how the entire wedding should go, especially when they are paying for it. Parents are allowed to give suggestions but they should never impose their opinions. Remember it is the bride and groom that are in charge and they should be allowed to make the final decisions.  Let them know that if they need help with anything, you’ll be there for them.

#2. Manage your guest list

No doubt you will want to invite your friends to come celebrate with you on this special day. However, you must wait until the bride and groom are done with their guest list before you can add yours. Don’t invite more than you are allowed to. Your children may not want an overcrowded wedding. So be sure to show them your list before sending out your invitations.

#3. Don’t offer to do more than you can

Make sure that what you volunteer to help with is comfortable with you. Whether it is offering too much time, money, help, advice, resources and then it not being around at the last minute when its needed. This is why it is always important to always figure out what you want to and can help with before committing to it. It is always a bad thing to over promise and under deliver.

#4. Be supportive

It is very easy for mothers to go overboard trying to be supportive and end up over doing certain things. Be the one to soothe the stress and not add to it when things are not going as planned. Do your best to always encourage the bride and groom and stay positive. Also help out in any way you can without being pushy.

#5. Dress

As the mother of the bride or groom, your dress should go along with the theme and venue of the day. Both of you should avoid white and anything close to it as that is only for the bride. It is always nice for the two mothers to have similar styles since both of them will be in many photos together. with some traditions, the mother of the bride has to pick her dress first before even the bride.

On the day of the wedding, try your best to make sure that guests feel comfortable and enjoy themselves.

Your children are likely to make decisions that you do not agree with. You might have your traditions and ways that they might not just care to follow. However remember that the wedding is all about them and what they want. So do your best to flow with what they want, even if it means keeping your opinion to yourself.
