These days families are separated due to work, school and other circumstances. Having a family reunion is one of the most effective and fun ways of bringing the family close together. For the older ones it can be a time to share memories and for the younger ones it can be a time to learn about their family. Below are tips that can help you plan your family reunion

#1. Get help from family members

The first step is to avoid doing things all by yourself. Involve family members in planning the activities probably a person from each family. Assign each member of your newly formed reunion committee a specific task. Tasks can include putting someone in charge of the venue, food, entertainment etc. Apart from tasks you can also ask for financial help from family members that can’t participate in the planning.

Remember to hold frequent meetings with your team to monitor the progress of their work and put ideas together.

#2. Date

Deciding on a date that will be suitable for everyone will be challenging. So you can try offering different dates and choose the one that suites the most people. Be flexible as much as possible. Also when selecting a date make sure it’s at least two months away so that people can plan towards it and clear their schedule especially if they live far away. Avoid dates that will conflict with events such as birthdays, weddings etc.

#3. Venue

Some people like holding reunion at the family house to bring back memories and to show younger kids where they grew up. However other things should be considered when choosing the venue. For instance, is the place big enough to accommodate the whole family? Is it easily located? Is it central enough for everyone to get to? Are there side attractions? Etc. also remember to analyze the cost of the place to see if it is affordable. Examples of venues can include the beach, a local community park etc.

#4. Food and drinks

It’s a must to have food and drinks in family reunions. You can either hire a caterer or make a list of dishes and ask each family to pick one they can prepare and bring. Make sure your list of food has something for everyone including children, vegetarian. It is a good idea to ask your guests if they have any allergies, as this will guide you in making the list.

#5. Activities

This should be the most interesting part or the reunion. Decide on activities that everyone would love to get involved in. It could include activities such as swimming, golfing, biking, etc. Also remember to include games, or craft projects for kids to keep them entertained. There should be a time when all family members can sit and just talk about how they are doing in life and a time when the young people can ask the older ones questions about the family.

When planning a reunion, remember to get everyone involved. Absolutely no one should be left out. Discourage gossips as much as possible and encourage anything that strengthens the entire family bond. Remember it’s a time to show love and support to its best to tell everyone to be very positive when coming.
