Organizing a fun day for kids is an effective way of bringing everyone together in the community. Although having an event for kids will scare some people, because of the work, effort and patience it involves, here are some tips that will make your planning easy and your event a success.

#1. Plan ahead

Give yourself a lot time (a month or two) to plan things. There are so many things you need to put in place like the budget, your plan B etc. Remember no or late planning, things will go messy.

#2. Date

Choose a date that doesn’t clash with other things happening in your local community such as big sporting events. You don’t want to be competing for attendance with another event. Summertime is better for an outdoor fun day but have a contingency plan in place in case it rains!

#3. Venue

Since it’s a kid’s event, the venue should be carefully decided on. The venue needs to have enough free space so that kids will be able to play. You could use open spaces in your community like a park, or any other suitable space in your neighborhood. Avoid places that have breakable items like glasses. Decide where it will be held and book it well in advance, remember if you need to pay for it, you might be able to get a discount for kids.

#4. Volunteers

You can’t organize and take care of all the kids as one person. Therefore, you will need as much help as possible. Recruit volunteers in your community to help you run your event and allocate everyone a job that they are comfortable with and which uses their skills and experience. Don’t forget to invite children and young people onto your planning group! They might have great ideas that can help.

#5. Funding

Hosting an event requires funding. You need to come up with ideas with your team on how to raise funds both before and during the event. Fund-raising ideas on the day could include raffles, face painting, lucky dips etc.

#6. Activities and entertainment

Think about activities that kids enjoy. Remember if activities are too simple for older children they can get bored but if it’s too hard for younger children they can get discouraged. You can include art projects in the activities as children always have fun making it and later appreciate their work. It’s a good idea to have some performances on the side. Get your community involved and gather up some talents these could include singing, juggler clowns etc. this way, everyone enjoys the day and goes away feeling like they are a part of making the day a success.

#7. Food

It doesn’t have to be complicated. Prepare dishes that kids enjoy or buy some to cut cost and convenience. Throw in healthy foods like fruit and veggie plates. Also, remember to add sweets. Involve other parents when planning the food and find out which kids have allergies.

#8. Promotion

Promote the fun day through local businesses, local press, radio, posters, news- letters and emails. Also, go to schools or any other place you can reach out to the children of your community. For this to be effective, get influential people to help. People like local celebrities, the mayor or councilors etc.

Remember your dealing with kids so it’s always wise to have a contingency plan, and remember to have a first aid kit around just in case there’s an injury
